GPA Calculator Tips for Students
Learn how GPA is calculated, understand weighted vs unweighted GPA, and discover strategies to improve your grades.
The 4.0 Grade Scale
Most US schools use a 4.0 scale where each letter grade corresponds to a numeric value:
- A = 4.0 | A- = 3.7
- B+ = 3.3 | B = 3.0 | B- = 2.7
- C+ = 2.3 | C = 2.0 | C- = 1.7
- D+ = 1.3 | D = 1.0 | F = 0.0
How to Calculate Your GPA
GPA is a weighted average based on credit hours. For each course, multiply the grade points by the credit hours, then divide the total by the sum of all credit hours:
GPA = Sum of (Grade Points × Credit Hours) / Total Credit Hours
Example: You take three courses — Biology (4 credits, grade A = 4.0), English (3 credits, grade B+ = 3.3), and Math (3 credits, grade A- = 3.7). Your GPA is: (4×4.0 + 3×3.3 + 3×3.7) / (4+3+3) = 37.0 / 10 = 3.70.
Weighted vs Unweighted GPA
Unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale for all classes. Weighted GPA gives extra points for honors, AP, or IB courses — typically on a 5.0 scale. An A in an AP class might count as 5.0 instead of 4.0, rewarding students who take more challenging coursework.
Strategies to Improve Your GPA
- Prioritize higher-credit courses — they have a bigger impact on your GPA
- Use grade replacement if your school allows retaking courses
- Focus on weak subjects early — a C-to-A improvement adds more points than an A- to A
- Attend office hours and seek help before grades slip
