How to Use This Calculator

How to Use the Tip Splitter

The Tip Splitter divides restaurant bills and tips among multiple diners, handling both equal and uneven splits. Perfect for group dining situations where you need to figure out exactly what each person owes, including their share of the tip and tax.

Equal Split

Enter the total bill amount, tip percentage, and number of people. The calculator divides everything equally. A $120 bill with 20% tip ($24) among 4 people is $36 per person. This is the simplest and most common way to handle group dining.

Itemized Split

For groups where people ordered differently priced items, enter each person individual subtotal. The calculator proportionally divides tax and tip based on what each person ordered. If Alice meal cost $30 and Bob meal cost $50, Alice pays 37.5% of the shared costs and Bob pays 62.5%.

Handling Shared Items

Appetizers, pitchers, and desserts shared by the table can be split equally among all diners or among only those who shared them. The calculator lets you allocate shared items separately, then adds each person share to their individual items before calculating the tip split.

Rounding Options

Choose to round each person total up to the nearest dollar for convenience, or round to the nearest quarter. When rounding up, one person may pay slightly less to keep the grand total exact. The calculator shows both the exact and rounded amounts.

Who Owes What Summary

The final summary shows each person name, their food subtotal, their share of tax, their share of tip, and their total. This clear breakdown prevents disagreements and makes payment collection easy. Share the summary via text message or show it to the group.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Should the tip be split equally or proportionally?

A: Both methods are common. Equal splitting is simpler and assumes everyone received equal service. Proportional splitting (based on what each person ordered) is fairer when there is a large price difference between meals. Discuss with your group to avoid awkwardness.

Q: How do I handle someone who only had drinks?

A: Use the itemized split feature. Enter the drinker individual tab. They pay tip only on their portion. Do not force someone who had a $15 cocktail to split a $200 dinner equally unless they agree to it.

Q: What about tax-included pricing?

A: If the menu prices include tax (common in some countries), toggle off the separate tax calculation. The tip is then calculated on the total bill directly. If tax is listed separately on the receipt, the calculator can apply the tip to the pre-tax or post-tax amount based on your preference.
