How to Use This Calculator
How to Use the Grade Calculator
The Grade Calculator computes your current course grade based on weighted categories and determines what scores you need on remaining assignments to achieve your target grade. It eliminates the stress of grade uncertainty by showing exactly where you stand and what you need.
Setting Up Grade Categories
Enter your course grade categories with their weights. Common setups: Homework (20%), Quizzes (15%), Midterm (25%), Final Exam (40%). Or: Participation (10%), Assignments (30%), Tests (35%), Final Project (25%). Weights must total 100%.
Entering Scores
For each category, enter the scores you have received. The calculator averages scores within each category, then applies the weights. If your homework scores are 90, 85, 95, 80, and 88, your homework average is 87.6%. Weighted at 20%, this contributes 17.52 points to your final grade.
Current Grade Calculation
Your current grade is calculated from completed work only, weighted proportionally. If you have completed homework (20%) and quizzes (15%) but not the midterm or final, your current grade is based on those two categories rescaled to 100%. This tells you where you stand right now.
What Do I Need on the Final?
Enter your target grade (e.g., 90% for an A) and the calculator shows exactly what score you need on remaining assignments. If your current weighted average is 88% from 60% of the grade, and the final exam is 40%, you need: (90 - 0.6 × 88) / 0.4 = 93% on the final to get a 90 overall.
Grade Scenarios
The calculator shows grade outcomes for different final exam scores. See what happens if you score a 70, 80, 90, or 100 on the final. This helps you prioritize studying for different courses based on which grades are most achievable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I handle dropped lowest grades?
A: If your syllabus says the lowest quiz grade is dropped, exclude that score from your entries. The calculator averages the remaining scores. Some courses drop the lowest 1-2 scores in a category; simply enter all scores except the ones that would be dropped.
Q: What if my course uses points instead of percentages?
A: Convert to percentages by dividing your score by the total possible points. A score of 42 out of 50 is 84%. Alternatively, enter total points earned and total points possible for the course; the calculator converts to a percentage grade.
Q: Can extra credit push my grade above 100%?
A: If your instructor offers extra credit, it can push category or overall scores above 100%. Enter the actual scores including extra credit points. A homework score of 105/100 is 105%. The calculator handles scores above 100% correctly in all its calculations.
